Pearce names England U21 squad
Stuart Pearce has named his final squad for England’s Under-21 internationals against Iceland and Norway this weekend.
Tottenham’s Kyle Walker and the Manchester United duo of Phil Jones and Danny Welbeck have all been called up to join Fabio Capello’s senior side for the Euro 2012 qualifier away to Montenegro on Friday, forcing Pearce to make changes to his initial 27-man squad.
There were also injuries for Pearce to consider, with Sunderland striker Connor Wickham and Tottennham midfielder Danny Rose unavailable, while Middlesborough’s Joe Bennett was sent home due to illness.
Pearce has been able to call up Liverpool’s Jon Flanagan, however, from the under-19 squad, while Arsenal’s Alex Oxlade-Chamberlain is handed another chance to shine after an impressive cameo against Israel last month.
The team will fly out to Reykjavik on Tuesday for their meeting with Iceland on Thursday, before heading to Drammen for Monday’s clash with Norway.
Full squad: Goalkeepers: Ben Amos (Manchester United), Jack Butland (Cheltenham Town – on loan from Birmingham), Declan Rudd (Norwich City).
